Mercredi soir, je suis allé voir Wolfmother en concert au Trabendo. J’y suis allé parce qu’Olivier avait une place VIP en trop, obtenue par un ami photographe à lui. Bien cool de sa part !

Première partie : The Hall Effect

Nous sommes arrivés dans la salle alors que leur dernier accord résonnait. The Hall Effect – groupe indie colombien qui chante en anglais – sonne pourtant bien si l’on en juge leurs titres sur MySpace.

Leur bassiste ressemble pas mal à Lemmy Kilmister de Motörhead, je trouve cela rigolo.

Wolfmother

Concert court (1h15 en tout) mais très bon : j’ai trouvé le son excellent, le groupe bouge vraiment bien sur scène et nous nous sommes régalés.

Les influences sont perceptibles immédiatement : quelques accords ici qui sonnent comme les Rolling Stones, d’autres accords clairs à la Led Zeppelin, un phrasé à la Black Sabbath là-bas, la voix du chanteur qui s’apparente à celle de Jack White des White Stripes… pas à dire, on sait à peu près à quoi ils ont été nourris !

Vendredi soir, je suis allé voir The Cult en concert au Bataclan avec mon collègue rockeux de toujours, Olivier.

Première partie : Aqua Nebula Oscilator

Je vais passer très vite sur la première partie parce que c’était horrible : mauvais son (soupe au niveau de la guitare), chanteuse à frange sans voix, micros trop bas, batteur mou et bassiste qui a joué l’intégralité du set dos au public.

Le tout avec des effets mal utilisés – ne peut jouer du theremin qui veut. J’ai eu l’impression d’entendre la même chanson tout au long de la demi-heure du set. Insoutenable.

Si vous ne les connaissez pas, The Cult est un groupe de rock anglais formé à Bradford en 1981 avec Ian Astbury au chant et Billy Duffy à la guitare.

C’est le duo compositeur du groupe (un peu comme Mick Jagger et Keith Richards), même si les autres membres du groupe ont changé changé au fil du temps.

Au niveau du style, cela oscille entre post-punk, gothic rock et rock psychédélique (tendance Doors).

ZZ Top

ZZ Top is an American rock band formed in 1969 in Houston, Texas. For 51 years, the band comprised vocalist-guitarist Billy Gibbons, drummer Frank Beard and vocalist-bassist Dusty Hill, until Hill’s death in 2021.

Rooted in blues, ZZ Top developed a signature sound based on Gibbons’ blues guitar style and Hill and Beard’s rhythm section.

They are popular for their live performances, sly and humorous lyrics, and the similar appearances of Gibbons and Hill, who were rarely seen without their long beards, sunglasses, and hats.

ZZ Top formed after the demise of Moving Sidewalks, Gibbons’ previous band. Within a year, the members signed with London Records and released ZZ Top’s First Album (1971).

Subsequent releases, such as Tres Hombres (1973) and Fandango! (1975), and those albums’ singles, “La Grange” and “Tush”, gained extensive radio airplay. By the mid-1970s the band became renowned in North America for its live act, highlighted by its performances during the Worldwide Texas Tour from 1976 to 1977, which was a critical and commercial success.

After a hiatus, ZZ Top returned in 1979 with a new musical direction and image, with Gibbons and Hill wearing sunglasses and matching chest-length beards. With the album El Loco (1981), the group began to experiment with synthesizers and drum machines.

They established a more mainstream sound and gained international favor with Eliminator (1983) and Afterburner (1985), which integrated influences from new wave, punk, and dance-rock.

The popularity of these albums’ music videos, including those for “Gimme All Your Lovin'”, “Sharp Dressed Man”, and “Legs”, helped propel them onto the television channel MTV and made the band one of the more prominent artists in 1980s pop culture. The Afterburner Tour set records for the highest-attended and highest-grossing concert tour of 1986.

After gaining additional acclaim with the release of their tenth album Recycler (1990) and its accompanying tour, the group’s experimentation continued with mixed success on the albums Antenna (1994), Rhythmeen (1996), XXX (1999), and Mescalero (2003).

They most recently released La Futura (2012) and Goin’ 50 (2019), a compilation album commemorating the band’s 50th anniversary. By the time of Hill’s death in 2021, ZZ Top had become the longest-running band with an unchanged lineup in the history of popular music. Per Hill’s wishes, he was replaced by their longtime guitar tech Elwood Francis on bass.

ZZ Top has released 15 studio albums and sold an estimated 50 million albums worldwide. They have won three MTV Video Music Awards, and in 2004, the members were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

In 2015, Rolling Stone ranked Gibbons the 32nd greatest guitarist of all time.

Neil Young

Neil Percival Young (born November 12, 1945) is a Canadian-American singer-songwriter, musician, and activist.

After embarking on a music career in Winnipeg in the 1960s, Young moved to Los Angeles, joining Buffalo Springfield with Stephen Stills, Richie Furay, and others.

Since the beginning of his solo career with his backing band Crazy Horse, Young has released many critically acclaimed and important albums, such as Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, After the Gold Rush, and Harvest. He was a part-time member of Crosby, Stills & Nash.

Young has received several Grammy and Juno Awards. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted him twice: in 1995 as a solo artist and in 1997 as a member of Buffalo Springfield. In 2000, Rolling Stone named Young #34 on their list of the 100 greatest musical artists.

According to Acclaimed Music, he is the 7th most celebrated artist in popular music history. His guitar work, deeply personal lyrics and signature high tenor singing voice define his long career. He also plays piano and harmonica on many albums, which frequently combine folk, rock, country and other musical genres.

His often distorted electric guitar playing, especially with Crazy Horse, earned him the nickname “Godfather of Grunge” and led to his 1995 album Mirror Ball with Pearl Jam. More recently he has been backed by Promise of the Real. 21 of his albums and singles have been certified Gold and Platinum in U.S by RIAA certification.

Young directed (or co-directed) films using the pseudonym “Bernard Shakey”, including Journey Through the Past (1973), Rust Never Sleeps (1979), Human Highway (1982), Greendale (2003), and CSNY/Déjà Vu (2008). He also contributed to the soundtracks of the films Philadelphia (1993) and Dead Man (1995).

Young has lived in California since the 1960s but retains Canadian citizenship. He was awarded the Order of Manitoba in 2006 and was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2009.

He became a United States citizen, taking dual citizenship, in 2020.
