Avec la chanson Courage, j’ai découvert The Tragically Hip, un groupe rock canadien de Kingston constitué de Gordon Downie (voix), Paul Langlois (guitare), Rob Baker (guitare), Gord Sinclair (basse) et Johnny Fay (batterie).
Le nom du groupe provient d’un sketch du film Elephant Parts de Michael Nesmith. Le groupe est hautement populaire et influent à travers le Canada.

Analyse
Il y a dans la chanson une référence au roman The Watch that Ends the Night de Hugh MacLennan :
“But that night as I drove back to Montreal I at least discovered this: that there’s no simple explanation for anything important any of us do, and that the human tragedy, or the human irony, consists in the necessity of living with the consequences of actions performed under the pressure of compulsions so obscure we do not and cannot understand them.”

Dans le roman, un homme se marie avec son amour d’enfance (qui a une santé fragile) après que son mari est considéré comme mort à la guerre. Le retour du mari engendre une crise.
La chanson fait écho au roman. Le courage ne pouvait pas venir à un pire moment mais il n’est pas non plus venu quand on en avait besoin.
Ce n’est pas tant vivre avec les conséquences d’un acte terrible que de vivre avec les conséquences des décisions ordinaires que l’on prend tous les jours et les regrets que l’on a lorsque nous échouons à réaliser les choses.
Une très belle chanson.
